Morning Prayer

O God, you are my God, early will I seek you.
In the morning, I will direct my prayer unto you and will look up.

New are your mercies every morning, O Lord;
And great is your faithfulness.

Let us pray:

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who are in heaven;
Hallowed be your Name;
Your kingdom come;
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And let us not be led into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.

Thanksgiving for the gift of another day

We give you heartfelt thanks, O heavenly Father, for the rest of the past night, and for the gift of a new day. Grant that we may so pass its hours in the perfect freedom of your service, that, when evening comes, we may again rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Collect of the Day

Sunday
A Collect for Strength to Await Christ’s Return

O God our King, by the resurrection of your Son Jesus Christ on the first day of the week, you conquered sin, put death to flight, and gave us the hope of everlasting life: Redeem all our days by this victory; forgive our sins, banish our fears, make us bold to praise you and to do your will; and steel us to wait for the consummation of your kingdom on the last great Day; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Monday
A Collect for the Renewal of Life

O God, the King eternal, whose light divides the day from the night and turns the shadow of death into the morning: Drive far from us all wrong desires, incline our hearts to keep your law, and guide our feet into the way of peace; that, having done your will with cheerfulness during the day, we may, when evening comes, rejoice to give you thanks; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Tuesday
A Collect for Peace

O God, who are the author of peace and lover of concord, in knowledge of whom stands our eternal life, and whose service is perfect freedom: Defend us, your humble servants, in all assaults of our enemies; that we, surely trusting in your defence, may not fear the power of any adversaries, through the might of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Wednesday
A Collect for Grace

O Lord, our heavenly Father, almighty and everlasting God, who have brought us safely to the beginning of this day: Defend us by your mighty power, and grant that this day we may not fall into sin, nor run into any danger; but that guided by your Spirit, we may do what is righteous in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thursday
A Collect for Guidance

O Heavenly Father, in whom we live and move and have our being: We humbly pray you so to guide and govern us by your Holy Spirit, that in all the cares and occupations of our life we may not forget you, but remember that we are ever walking in your sight; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Friday
A Collect for Endurance

Almighty God, whose most dear Son went not up to joy but first he suffered pain, and entered not into glory before he was crucified: Mercifully grant that we, walking in the way of the cross, may find it none other than the way of life and peace; through Jesus Christ your Son our Lord. Amen.

Saturday
A Collect for Sabbath Rest

Almighty God, who after the creation of the world rested from all your works and sanctified a day of rest for all your creatures: Grant that we, putting away all earthly anxieties, may be duly prepared for the service of your sanctuary, and that our rest here upon earth may be a preparation for the eternal rest promised to your people in heaven; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For the Family

Merciful Saviour, who loved Martha and Mary and Lazarus, hallowing their home with your sacred presence: Bless, we pray you, our home, that your love may rest upon us, and that your presence may be with us. May we all grow in grace and in the knowledge of you, our Lord and Saviour. Teach us to love one another as you have given commandment. Help us to bear one another’s burdens and so fulfill your law, O blessed Jesus, who with the Father and the Holy Spirit live and reign, one God, for evermore. Amen.

For Children

O Lord Jesus Christ, who took little children into your arms and blessed them: Bless, we ask you, the children of this family; grant that they may grow up in your fear and love; give them day by day your strength and guidance, so that they may continue in your love and service unto their lives’ end. Grant this, O blessed Saviour, for your own Name’s sake. Amen.

For the Parish

Most merciful Father, we pray you to send your heavenly blessing upon your Church in this Parish, that all its members may dwell together in unity and brotherly love. Keep far from us all self-will and discord. Endue your ministers with righteousness, and enable them to faithfully dispense your holy Word and Sacraments, to bring again the outcasts, and to seek the lost. Grant that we may so receive their ministrations, and use your means of grace, that in all our words and deeds we may seek your glory and the advancement of your kingdom; through Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

For Daily Work

O Lord our Heavenly Father, by whose providence our duties are variously ordered: Grant to us all the spirit to labour heartily to do our work in our several stations, in serving one Master and looking for one reward. Teach us to put to good account whatever talents you have lent to us, and enable us to redeem our time by patience and zeal; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The TEN COMMANDMENTS

“I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery:

I - “You shall have no other gods before me."

II - “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments."

III - “You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain."

IV - “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labour, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy."

V - “Honour your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you."

VI - “You shall not murder."

VII - “You shall not commit adultery."

VIII - “You shall not steal."

IX - “You shall not bear false witness against your neighbour."

X - “You shall not covet your neighbour's house; you shall not covet your neighbour's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbour's.”

The Apostles' Creed

I believe in God, the Father almighty,
       creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord.
       He was conceived by the Holy Spirit
       and born of the Virgin Mary.
       He suffered under Pontius Pilate,
       was crucified, died, and was buried.
       He descended to the dead.
       On the third day he rose again.
       He ascended into heaven,
       and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
       He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,
       the holy catholic Church,
       the communion of saints,
       the forgiveness of sins,
       the resurrection of the body,
       and the life everlasting.

Amen.

Prayer and Intercession

Starting with open intercessions for our family and community

O Lord God, who have bidden light to shine out of darkness, and have again wakened us to praise you for your goodness and to ask for your grace: Accept now the offering of our worship and thanksgiving, and grant to us all such requests as may be acceptable to your holy will. Make us to live as children of the light, and heirs of your everlasting kingdom.

Remember, O Lord, according to the multitude of your mercies, your whole Church, all who join with us in prayer, and all our brethren, wherever they may be, who stand in need of your aid.

Pour down upon us all the riches of your grace, so that, redeemed in soul and body, and steadfast in faith, we may ever praise your wonderful and holy Name; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

O God, Most High and Holy, Three in One, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit; we offer to you this day ourselves, our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and living sacrifice unto you; to whom be all praise and glory. Amen.

The Grace
II Corinthians 13:14

May the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, and the love of God,
and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit,
be with us all evermore.

Amen.

Evening Prayer

O Lord, let our prayer be set forth in your sight as the incense,
And the lifting up of our hands as an evening sacrifice.

Let us confess our sins to Almighty God:

O Almighty Father, Lord of heaven and earth, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed. Have mercy upon us, O Lord; have mercy upon us after your great goodness. According to the multitude of your mercies do away our offences. Wash us thoroughly from our wickedness, and cleanse us from our sins. For Jesus Christ’s sake. Amen.

For Pardon through the Cross

Almighty Father, who of your great love to men gave your dearly beloved Son to die for us: Grant that through his Cross our sins may be put away, and remembered no more against us, and that, cleansed by his Blood, and mindful of his sufferings, we may take up our cross daily, and follow him in newness of life, until we come to his everlasting kingdom; through the same your Son Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Lord God, whose Son our Saviour Jesus Christ triumphed over the powers of death and prepared for us our place in the new Jerusalem: Grant that we, who have this day given thanks for his resurrection, may praise you in that City of which he is the light, and where he lives and reigns forever and ever. Amen.

Monday
A Collect for Peace

O God, the source of all holy desires, all good counsels, and all just works: Give to your servants that peace which the world cannot give, that our hearts may be set to obey your commandments, and that we, being defended from the fear of our enemies, may pass our time in rest and quietness, through the merits of Jesus Christ our Saviour. Amen.

Tuesday
A Collect for Aid against Perils

Lighten our darkness, we beseech you, O Lord; and by your great mercy defend us from all perils and dangers of this night; for the love of your only Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Wednesday
A Collect for Protection

O God, the life of all who live, the light of the faithful, the strength of those who labour, and the repose of the dead: We thank you for the blessings of the day that is past, and humbly ask for your protection through the coming night. Bring us in safety to the morning hours; through him who died and rose again for us, your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ. Amen.

Thursday
A Collect for the Presence of Christ

Lord Jesus, stay with us, for evening is at hand and the day is past; be our companion in the way, kindle our hearts, and awaken hope, that we may know you as you are revealed in Scripture and the breaking of bread. Grant this for the sake of your love. Amen.

Friday
A Collect for Faith

Lord Jesus Christ, by your death you took away the sting of death: Grant to us your servants so to follow in faith where you have led the way, that we may at length fall asleep peacefully in you and wake up in your likeness; for your tender mercies’ sake. Amen.

Saturday
A Collect for the Eve of Worship

O God, the source of eternal light: Shed forth your unending day upon us who watch for you, that our lips may praise you, our lives may bless you, and our worship on the morrow give you glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

For Freedom from Worry

O Lord, you who have pity for all our weakness: Put away from us worry and every anxious fear, that, having ended the labours of the day in your sight, and committing our tasks, ourselves, and all we love into your keeping, we may, now that night has come, receive from you your priceless gift of sleep; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father, who are in heaven;
Hallowed be your Name;
Your kingdom come;
Your will be done, on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread;
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive those who trespass against us;
And let us not be led into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.

For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever.
Amen.

The Greatest Commandments

"Which commandment is the most important of all?"

Jesus answered, "The most important is,

'Hear O Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is one.
And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.

The second is this: 'You shall love your neighbour as yourself.'

There is no other commandment greater than these."

The Nicene Creed

We believe in one God,
        the Father, the Almighty,
        maker of heaven and earth,
        of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
        eternally begotten of the Father,
        God from God, Light from Light,
        true God from true God,
        begotten, not made,
        of one Being with the Father;
        through him all things were made.
        For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
        was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary,
        and was made man.
        For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
        he suffered death and was buried.
        On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures;
        he ascended into heaven
        and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
        He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
        and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
        who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
        who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified,
        who has spoken through the prophets.
        We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church.
        We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
        We look for the resurrection of the dead,
        and the life of the world to come.

Amen.

For Relatives and Friends

Starting with open intercessions for our family and community

O Loving Father, we commend to your gracious keeping all who are near and dear to us. Have mercy upon any who are sick, and comfort those who are in pain, anxiety or sorrow. Awaken all who are careless about eternal things. Bless those who are young and in health, that they may give the days of their strength to you. Comfort the aged and infirm, that your peace may rest upon them. Hallow the ties of kindred, that we may help, and not hinder, one another in all such good works as you have prepared for us to walk in; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Compline Hymn

Before the ending of the day,
Creator of the world, we pray
That you, with steadfast love, would keep
Your watch around us while we sleep.

From evil dreams defend our sight,
From fears and terrors of the night;
Tread underfoot our ghostly foe
That we no sinful thought may know.

O Father, that we ask be done
Through Jesus Christ, your only Son;
And Holy Spirit, by whose breath
Our souls are raised to life from death.

nIGHTTIME COLLECT

O Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, who at this evening hour rested in the sepulchre, and thereby sanctified the grave to be a bed of hope to your people: Make us so to abound in sorrow for our sins, which were the cause of your passion, that when our bodies lie in the dust, our souls may live with you, who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, ages without end. Amen.

The Collects for Protection

Select one or more:

Visit, we beseech you, O Lord, this place, and drive from it all the snares of the enemy; let your holy angels dwell here to preserve us in peace; and may your blessing be upon us evermore; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Look down, O Lord, from your heavenly throne, illuminate the darkness of this night with your celestial brightness, and from the children of light banish the deeds of darkness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Be present, O merciful God, and protect us through the silent hours of this night, so that we who are wearied by the changes and chances of this fleeting world, may rest upon your eternal changelessness; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Thanksgiving

O most merciful Father, we humbly thank you for all your gifts so freely bestowed upon us. For life and health and safety, for power to work and leisure to rest, for all that is beautiful in creation and in the lives of men, we praise and magnify your holy Name.

But, above all, we thank you for our spiritual mercies in Christ Jesus our Lord, for the means of grace, and for the hope of glory. Fill our hearts with all joy and peace in believing; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Doxology
Ephesians 3:20-21

Now unto Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, unto Him be glory in the Church and in Christ Jesus, throughout all generations, ages without end. Amen.

A Bedtime Prayer

We will lay ourselves down and sleep in peace;
For you alone, O Lord, make us dwell in safety.

You, O Lord, are in the midst of us,
And we are called by your Name.
Leave us not, O Lord our God.

Preserve us, O Lord, waking, and guard us sleeping,
That awake we may watch with Christ,
And asleep we may rest in peace.

Amen.

Sung Doxology

Praise God, from whom all blessings flow,
Praise Him, all creatures here below,
Praise Him above, you heavenly hosts,
Praise Father, Son and Holy Ghost!

Amen.

Commendation

The Lord Almighty grant us a quiet night, and at the last a perfect end;
And the blessing of God Almighty, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit,
be with us this night, and for evermore.

Amen.
