What is the Daily Office?

For centuries, Christians have practiced the spiritual discipline of morning and evening prayer. Anglicans call this pattern of prayer the Daily Office. In the Anglican Daily Office, we hear from God in his Word (reading through the Old Testament once annually and the New Testament twice annually), confess our sins and receive assurance of God’s mercy, offer prayers of praise and thanksgiving to God, and “ask, for ourselves and on behalf of others, those things which are necessary for our life and our salvation.” One of the great virtues of the Daily Office is that it helps us to move beyond our top-of-mind concerns (though of course we can pray about those too!), and to set our mind on the things that should be most important to us as Christians.

Praying the Daily Office

You can find the Daily Office in the Book of Common Prayer (2019). Members of St. Timothy’s looking for a hard-copy of the BCP 2019 are advised to speak to Pastor Josiah before ordering online!

The same material is available on the dailyoffice2019.com website, which presents the full services for Morning and Evening Prayer (as well as Midday Prayer and Compline) in a streamlined online interface.

The Daily Office Podcast publishes daily audio recordings of Morning and Evening Prayer, led by the Rev. Andrew Russell (St. Peter’s Anglican Church, Birmingham, Alabama).
